# daniel

proper noun (Daniel)

«daniel» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. (Bible) Daniel is a Jewish prophet in the Bible who was taken to Babylon, stayed faithful to God, and was thrown into a den of lions but came out unhurt. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/D/daniel/#m1)
2. Daniel is a common boy's first name. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/D/daniel/#m2)

### In the lessons

In Sunday school and RE, "Daniel in the lions' den" teaches courage and faith: Daniel kept praying to God even when the king's law forbade it. The Book of Daniel also tells of the fiery furnace and the writing on the wall. In stories and class lists Daniel (Dan, Danny) is just a name.

### Note

A name: always capital D. Short forms Dan, Danny. The input word is lower case, but in real text it is a name. "The writing on the wall" (a sign of coming trouble) comes from the Book of Daniel.

## In Jewish tradition

A Jewish man of the Writings who was taken to Babylon. He served kings, interpreted dreams, and had visions of the future. The book of Daniel is named for him.

**Interpretation.** Tradition counts Daniel among the Writings, not the Prophets. He is remembered for staying faithful to God, for escaping the lions' den, and for visions read as hinting at the end of days.
