### In the lessons

Common in money maths (deposits make a balance bigger, withdrawals make it smaller), in geography and science (rivers deposit mud and sand; deposits of minerals), and in everyday life (a deposit on a flat, a bottle deposit). Phrases: «pay a deposit», «make a deposit», «deposit money», «a security deposit», «a non-refundable deposit».

### Note

Stress: de-POS-it for both noun and verb. Opposite of «withdraw / withdrawal». In maths: a deposit ADDS to the account balance (balance 100, deposit 30, new balance 130); a deposit on a purchase is subtracted from the full price to find what is still owed (price 200, deposit 50, still to pay 150).

## In Jewish tradition

In this law it means something a person keeps safe for a neighbor.

**Interpretation.** The law says that if someone lies about a deposit, he sins against God as well as against his neighbor. Tradition teaches that honesty in money matters is a duty to God.

### Examples

- If any one sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and deal falsely with his neighbour in a matter of deposit, or of pledge, or of robbery, or have oppressed his neighbour; (Torah LEV.6.2, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/D/deposit/#x1)
- And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand, and deposited them in the house; and he let the men go, and they departed. (Prophets 2KI.5.24, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/D/deposit/#x2)
- And they went in to the king into the court; but they had deposited the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe; and they told all the words in the ears of the king. (Prophets JER.36.20, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/D/deposit/#x3)

### Note
