In everyday life: digging in the garden or at the beach. Phrases: «dig a hole», «dig up», «dig in», «dig deep» (try very hard).

### Note

Past «dug» (not «digged»). Maths: a rate over time: amount = rate × time. Trap: more diggers dig faster, so the time goes down. Safety: never dig near cables or pipes without a grown-up.

## In Jewish tradition

Digging wells was vital for survival in the dry land, and Isaac's servants dug wells that brought quarrels with neighbours. The prophets and psalms speak of digging a pit as a picture for plotting harm, and Ezekiel is told to dig through a wall as a sign.

**Interpretation.** Tradition sees Isaac redigging his father's wells as continuing Abraham's work, and the third well, Rehoboth, as a sign of peace. The pit dug for another is read as a warning that evil plans are aimed at the righteous but belong to the wicked.
