# diverse

### In the lessons

In citizenship lessons, schools and countries like the UK, USA, Canada and Australia are called «diverse» because people come from many backgrounds, cultures and faiths. In science, a rainforest is a diverse habitat with many species («biodiversity»). Phrases: «culturally diverse», «a diverse range of».

## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it means of different kinds, as in two different weights or mixed kinds of cattle, seed or cloth.

**Interpretation.** Tradition takes the laws against diverse weights as a call for honest trade, and the mixing laws (such as shatnez, wool with linen) as commands kept without a stated reason.
