Order matters: 12 ÷ 3 is not 3 ÷ 12. ## In Jewish tradition In Exodus it means a clear separation that God makes between Israel and Egypt during the plagues. In Joshua and Judges it also means the tribal groups or shares of the land, such as "the divisions of Reuben." **Interpretation.** Tradition sees the division in Egypt as a sign that God's power rules, protecting Israel in Goshen while Egypt suffers.
