### Meaning

(informal, UK) bravery that comes from drinking alcohol.

### In the lessons

A jokey British phrase for having a drink before a scary thing (speech, asking someone out); everyday; UK, Ireland, Australia. Can be seen as unfair to the Dutch.

### Examples

- He had a drink for Dutch courage before his speech.
- The groom needed some Dutch courage before the wedding.
- Chat: «Need some Dutch courage before the karaoke.»
- Dutch courage often leads to bad decisions.
- The story says soldiers had gin for Dutch courage.
- She didn't need Dutch courage; she was brave without it.

### Note

It means «brave because of alcohol». Not about the Netherlands people being brave. Alcohol is for adults only.
