## In Jewish tradition

A strong bird used as a picture of God's care: He carried Israel "on eagles' wings" and watches over them as an eagle over its nest. In poems it also stands for renewed strength and for swiftness.

**Interpretation.** Rashi explains the eagle carries its young on its wings, not in its claws, since it fears only arrows from below, so it shields them with its own body; so God protects Israel. The psalm's "youth renewed like the eagle" is read as God's gift of fresh strength.
