## In Jewish tradition

Used for Israel's stops in the wilderness and for the patriarchs' stays. Each stop was at God's command.

**Interpretation.** Tradition counts forty-two stops in the wilderness, and the commentators read them as stages in the soul's journey. Rashi notes that Israel camped and journeyed at God's word.
