# endangered

adjective (endangered); also the past form of «endanger» (endanger, endangers, endangered, endangering)

«endangered» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. An endangered animal or plant is one that may soon die out completely because very few are left. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/endangered/#m1)
2. Endangered means put in danger. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/endangered/#m2)

### In the lessons

In science and geography lessons, endangered species include tigers, pandas, orangutans, sea turtles and kakapos; causes are loss of habitat, hunting, pollution and climate change. In everyday life, people help by protecting habitats and not buying products that harm them. Phrases: «endangered species», «critically endangered», «endangered animals».

### Examples

- Tigers are an endangered species. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/endangered/#x1)

### Note

«Endangered» is not the same as «extinct»: endangered animals still exist but might die out; extinct ones are gone forever (like dinosaurs). In maths, problems may compare how many are left (numbers falling year on year).

## In Jewish tradition

Here it means put in danger or at risk of harm. The verse is a proverb about how every kind of work has its own risks.

**Interpretation.** Ecclesiastes is read as noting that even ordinary labor carries hazards, so a person needs wisdom and care to work safely.

### Examples

- Whoso quarrieth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby. (Writings ECC.10.9, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/E/endangered/#x1)
