## In Jewish tradition

In this verse it means to bear the burden of leading. Moses is told to share the work of judging so he can last. Elsewhere it means to last a long time, as God's promise that David's seed shall endure for ever, or to put up with something, as the earth cannot endure certain wrongs.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads it as Jethro's advice to appoint judges. It is the start of a system of courts in Israel. The promise that David's seed endures is read as pointing to the Messiah, a king from David's family.
