# entreat

verb (entreat, entreats, entreated, entreating)

## Everyday

To entreat someone is to beg them earnestly to do something; it is stronger than asking. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/entreat/#m1)

## In Jewish tradition

It is used for earnest prayer to God, as when Moses and Isaac pray for help.

**Interpretation.** Tradition sees these prayers as examples of heartfelt prayer, and the Rabbis noted that Isaac and Rebekah prayed facing each other.

Today we still say 'entreat someone' for begging, but 'entreated the LORD' is an old way of saying pleaded in prayer, and 'entreat' itself is old-fashioned.

### Examples
