## Everyday

1. Equality is being equal: when people have the same rights, chances and respect, whatever their sex, skin colour, religion, disability or background. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/equality/#m1)
2. (maths) Equality is when two amounts are the same; a statement with an equals sign, like 3 + 4 = 7, is an equality. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/equality/#m2)

### In the lessons

In citizenship and history lessons, pupils learn about fights for equality: votes for women, civil rights, equal pay. In ethics, equality is a key part of fairness, though fairness sometimes means giving extra help to those who need it (equity). In maths, an equality must balance on both sides. Phrases: equality of opportunity, gender equality, racial equality, fight for equality.

### Note

Uncountable. Adjective equal; verb equal / equalise. Maths: equality (=) vs inequality (\<, \>). Equality is not exactly equity: equality gives everyone the same; equity gives each what they need to have a fair chance.
