# equator

noun (the equator; the Equator)

«equator» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. The equator is an imaginary line around the middle of the Earth, halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/equator/#m1)
2. It divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/equator/#m2)

### In the lessons

In geography the equator is the line of latitude 0 degrees on maps and globes. Places near the equator are hot all year, with no real winter, and days and nights are about the same length. The seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are opposite: when it is summer in the UK, Canada and the USA, it is winter in Australia and New Zealand. Phrases: on the equator, north of the equator, south of the equator, cross the equator.

### Note

Usually «the equator» with «the». It is imaginary: there is no real line on the ground (though some places have painted lines for visitors). Myth: water does not reliably swirl the opposite way down drains on each side of the equator; sinks are too small for that.
