### In the lessons

In school and ethics, equity means e.g. a ramp for a wheelchair user, or extra reading help, so everyone can join in. In adult money talk, as the mortgage is paid, home equity grows. In maths, equity = value − debt: a house worth 300 thousand with 200 thousand owed has 100 thousand equity. Phrases: equity and fairness, home equity, negative equity (owing more than the house is worth), equality and equity.

### Note

Uncountable in the fairness sense. Maths: equity = value of asset − amount owed. Trap: equity (fair to each person's needs) vs equality (the same for everyone). Adjective equitable (fair).

## In Jewish tradition

It means fair and straight judging. It is often paired with justice and right.

**Interpretation.** Tradition sees God as the judge who rules fairly, and human judges must do the same. The Hebrew idea is connected to being straight and upright.
