«es» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. (Spanish) «Es» means «is» in Spanish: «es grande» means «it is big». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/es/#m1)
2. (French) «Tu es» means «you are» in French; the «s» is silent, so it sounds like «eh». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/es/#m2)
3. «-es» is also an English ending that makes plurals (box, boxes; bus, buses) and the «he/she» form of some verbs (she watches, he goes). [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/es/#m3)
4. (science) «Es» is the symbol for einsteinium, an element made in laboratories. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/es/#m4)

### In the lessons

In Spanish and French lessons «es» is a form of the verb «to be». In English spelling lessons pupils learn when to add «-es» rather than «-s»: after s, ss, sh, ch, x and z, and after many words ending in «o» (tomatoes, potatoes, heroes). In everyday Spanish heard in the USA, «¿Qué es?» means «what is it?».
