### In the lessons

In maths and probability, an event is a result or set of results you want to find the chance of, e.g. «the event of rolling an even number». In history, events are put in order on a timeline. In stories, the events are what happens in the plot, told in sequence. At school, sports day has events like the sack race and long jump. Phrases: «in the event of» (if something happens), «in any event», «current events», «sports event», «main event», «sequence of events».

### Note

Plural events. Starts with a vowel sound, so «an event». Stress on the second syllable: «ee-VENT». «In the event of» (formal) means «if ... happens».

## In Jewish tradition

In Ecclesiastes it means what happens to a person, and especially the fate that comes to all, which is death.

**Interpretation.** Ecclesiastes says the same end comes to the wise and the foolish. Tradition reads it as pointing people to what lasts and to the fear of God.
