# exceedingly

adverb (exceedingly)

«exceedingly» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. Exceedingly means very or extremely. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/exceedingly/#m1)
2. (formal, old-fashioned) Exceedingly is a stiff, polite way of saying «very much». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/exceedingly/#m2)

### In the lessons

It is used in stories, polite speech and formal writing: «exceedingly kind», «exceedingly rare». In everyday talk children usually say «really» or «super» instead. In exam or formal language it adds strong emphasis. In science, «exceedingly small» means much smaller than you can see. Phrases: exceedingly rare, exceedingly well, exceedingly difficult, exceedingly grateful.

### Note

An adverb: it goes before adjectives and other adverbs. It comes from «exceed» (go beyond). Do not use it before a noun («an exceedingly» needs an adjective after it). It does not give a number; in maths, «exceedingly large» is a description, not an amount.

## In Jewish tradition

An old way of saying "very much", used for great sin and for great growth in numbers.

**Interpretation.** Tradition sees God's promise to Abraham of many descendants as the start of the Jewish people.
