## In Jewish tradition

Used of Reuben's rank as firstborn, and of God's majesty above the skies and over His enemies.

**Interpretation.** Jacob's words to Reuben are read as saying he lost the firstborn's privileges, which passed to Joseph, Levi and Judah.
