# except

preposition, conjunction (except); verb (except — rare, formal)

«except» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. Except means not including; leaving out. «Everyone except Tom went» means Tom did not go. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/except/#m1)
2. Except that means but, apart from the fact that: «I'd come, except that I'm ill». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/E/except/#m2)

### In the lessons

takes one part out of a group: «all except 3» means the group minus 3; in everyday life: «open every day except Sunday», «all except one»; in grammar: «except» leaves out, «accept» means to take what is offered; phrases: «except for», «except that», «everyone except»

### Note

Points to taking away: «all except n» = total − n. Trap: «all except 5 left» means 5 stayed, so the answer may be 5, not total − 5; read what is asked. Trap: «every day except Sunday» is 6 days a week. Do not confuse «except» (leave out) with «accept» (take, agree).

## In Jewish tradition

In these old texts it often means "unless", as in "except your youngest brother come". In the primary lessons: takes one part out of a group: «all except 3» means the group minus 3; in everyday life: «open every day except Sunday», «all except one»; in grammar: «except» leaves out, «accept» means to take what is offered; phrases: «except for», «except that», «everyone except»
