## In Jewish tradition

To expiate is to have sin wiped away or atoned for, often by a sacrifice or by God's mercy.

**Interpretation.** The tradition teaches that after the Temple fell, kindness, truth, prayer and repentance take the place of sacrifice in atoning for sin. Isaiah's lips touched by a coal show a prophet being cleansed for his task.
