### Meaning

1. (euphemism, political) secretly seizing a suspect and sending them to another country for questioning, without a court's permission, often where they may be mistreated.
2. (literal parts) «rendition» means handing over; «extraordinary» means outside the normal rules.

### In the lessons

Government and security jargon, made to sound official and neutral while hiding kidnapping and possible torture; used in news, human-rights reports and courts. Formal, mostly US and UK news. Critics use it with quotation marks to show it is a cover word.

### Examples

- Human rights groups criticised the programme of extraordinary rendition.
- The journalist uncovered flights used for extraordinary rendition.
- Lawyers said extraordinary rendition was just kidnapping with a fancy name.
- The inquiry asked whether the airport had been used for extraordinary renditions.
- Our politics teacher said extraordinary rendition is a classic example of official spin.
- He was a victim of extraordinary rendition and was held for years without trial.
- The government denied any part in extraordinary rendition.
- The court ruled that extraordinary rendition broke the law.

### Note

Trap: «extraordinary» usually praises something (an extraordinary singer), but here it only means «outside the normal law». «Rendition» also means a performance of a song, which has nothing to do with this. Plain words: secret kidnapping and transfer of a prisoner.
