## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah, to find grace in someone's eyes means to be favored by them. Eyes also stand for sight, judgment and what a person desires. In the Prophets and Writings, eyes can also show attitude, as in winking, and God's eyes see truth and what is hidden.

**Interpretation.** "Eye for eye" is read by the rabbis as a rule of fair payment of money for harm, not literal injury. Tradition also reads "the eyes of the LORD" as God's watchful care, looking for truth and honesty.
