## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah, face often means presence. To fall on one's face is to bow in worship or grief, and God's face stands for His favor or presence. In Job, the "face" of an animal or garment means its surface or outside.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads God hiding His face as a time when His care is not felt, and falling on the face as deep humility. The psalmist's question "Why hidest Thou Thy face?" is read as a cry for God's nearness.
