# fad

noun (a fad, fads)

«fad» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. A fad is something, like a toy, game, fashion or food, that becomes very popular suddenly and is then quickly forgotten. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fad/#m1)
2. A fad diet is a popular way of eating that promises quick results but is often not healthy. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fad/#m2)

## In Jewish tradition

This is not the English word. It is part of "faded", used here of leaves that wither.

**Interpretation.** The prophets use withering leaves and fading flowers as pictures of a people and a pride that decay when they leave God.

### Examples

- I will utterly consume them, saith the LORD; there are no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig-tree, and the leaf is faded; and I gave them that which they transgress. (Prophets JER.8.13, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/F/fad/#x1)
- Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are smitten down with wine! (Prophets ISA.28.1, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/F/fad/#x2)

### Note

Countable. Similar: craze, trend. A fad is short; a trend can last longer.
