«fahrenheit» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

2. It is named after the scientist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, who invented it. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fahrenheit/#m2)

### In the lessons

In the USA, weather reports, ovens and fevers use Fahrenheit; in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland most temperatures are in Celsius, though older people in the UK sometimes say Fahrenheit for hot days. In maths and science pupils compare and convert the two scales. Phrases: degrees Fahrenheit, 98.6 °F (normal body temperature).

### Note

Write it with a capital F: Fahrenheit, °F. Spelling trap: Fahr-en-heit («hr» and «ei»). In maths: to change Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9, divide by 5, then add 32 (20 °C → 20 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 68 °F). To go back: subtract 32, multiply by 5, divide by 9. −40 °C = −40 °F.
