### Meaning

1. (euphemism) private problems at home such as illness, divorce, arguments or money trouble, which the speaker does not want to explain.
2. (literal) questions or topics about families in general.

### In the lessons

People say it to keep details private: at work, at school, in news about sports stars or politicians leaving a job. Polite, vague, all regions. It tells the listener «please don't ask».

- She missed a week of school because of family issues.
- The player left the tour early for family issues.
- He resigned citing family reasons, but everyone guessed the real story.
- I can't come to the party, family issues, sorry.
- The teacher said Josh was dealing with some family issues and asked us to be kind.

### Note

Trap: it hides the detail on purpose, so don't guess or spread rumours. «Leaving for family reasons» is sometimes a cover for being pushed out of a job. Polite to accept it and not ask further.
