## In Jewish tradition

Here it means shaped or carved with a tool. Aaron shapes the gold into the calf. In the Prophets and Writings it also means made or formed, whether an idol by a craftsman or a person by God's hands.

**Interpretation.** Commentators argue about Aaron's part in the golden calf. Some say he was forced into it and tried to delay the people, and the story is read as a warning about idolatry. Isaiah mocks idols made by hand, while the psalmist prays to the God who fashioned him to teach him.

### Examples

- And he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf; and they said: 'This is thy god, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'
