## In Jewish tradition

It often means an ancestor or forefather, not only a parent. It can also mean the founder of a people, as Esau is of the Edomites.

**Interpretation.** Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are called "the fathers," and Jews still see themselves as their descendants. The commandment to honor father and mother is one of the Ten Commandments.
