Opposite: male. Calling a woman "a female" can sound rude or cold; say "a woman" or "a girl". In maths: if 14 of 26 are female, 12 are male; the ratio female to male is 14:12 = 7:6.

## In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: Animals and people are male and female from creation, and the Torah sets some laws and prices differently for each. Tradition reads these as the law's differences in duty and not as a ranking of worth. In the primary lessons: In science: female animals lay eggs or give birth; female and male parts of flowers. In forms: tick male or female. In maths problems: counting females and males in a group or ratios. Phrases: female animal, female lion, female worker.
