### In the lessons

In science and DT lessons: ferrous metals (iron, steel) contain iron and usually rust and are magnetic; non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminium, gold) do not contain iron. Recycling centres sort ferrous and non-ferrous metal with magnets.

### Note

Technical word. Opposite: non-ferrous. Trap: not all metals are magnetic — only iron, nickel, cobalt and things containing them; most ferrous metals are magnetic but some steels are not.
