## Everyday

1. Fertilisation is when a male cell and a female cell join to start a new living thing, such as pollen joining an egg cell in a flower to make a seed. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#m1)
2. Fertilisation is also putting fertiliser on soil to help plants grow. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#m2)

### In the lessons

In science lessons on plant life cycles: pollination, then fertilisation, then seed formation, then seed dispersal, then germination. In animals, fertilisation happens when a sperm joins an egg. In gardening and farming, fertilisation of soil feeds crops. Phrases: «after fertilisation», «pollination and fertilisation».

### Examples

- After pollination, fertilisation happens inside the flower. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#x1)
- Fertilisation makes the flower's ovule grow into a seed. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#x2)
- In frogs, fertilisation happens in the water. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#x3)
- Draw the life cycle: germination, growth, pollination, fertilisation. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#x4)
- Too much fertilisation of fields can pollute rivers. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#x5)
- Bees help with pollination, which leads to fertilisation. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/F/fertilisation/#x6)

### Note

British spelling «fertilisation», American «fertilization»; both are correct. Verb: «fertilise» / «fertilize». Trap: pollination (pollen moves to another flower) comes before fertilisation (cells join); they are not the same. Not a number word.
