### Meaning

1. (old, informal) A bow for a fiddle (violin).
2. «fiddlesticks!» (old-fashioned, mild exclamation) = nonsense! or oh dear! — said when annoyed or disagreeing, instead of a swear word.

### In the lessons

In stories, grandparents and old-fashioned characters say «Fiddlesticks!» when something goes wrong or someone talks nonsense; it is a polite replacement for rough words. Phrases: «Oh, fiddlesticks!», «fiddlesticks to that».

### Examples

- «Fiddlesticks! That's not true at all!»
- The old fiddler held his fiddlestick.
- «I lost my key — fiddlesticks!»
- Grandpa says «fiddlesticks» instead of swearing.
- «Ghosts? Fiddlesticks!» laughed Aunt May.

### Note

Almost always used as «fiddlesticks!» with -s. Old-fashioned and harmless — a mild word, safe at school. Similar words: «nonsense!», «rubbish!», «drat!».
