### In the lessons

In maths it is the ordinal of 50 and also a fraction: one fiftieth = 1/50 = 0.02 = 2%. In everyday life it is used for birthdays and anniversaries: «Grandpa's fiftieth». Phrases: fiftieth birthday, fiftieth anniversary, one fiftieth.

Short form: 50th. Spelling: fifty changes y to ie: fiftieth. Pronounced with three syllables: FIF-tee-eth. As a fraction 1/50: divide by 50. Do not confuse with «fifteenth» (15th).

## In Jewish tradition

The fiftieth year is the jubilee year, when the land rested and was not sown.

**Interpretation.** Tradition counts seven cycles of seven years and then makes the fiftieth year holy: slaves were freed and land went back to its families. It was a year of fairness and rest.
