### Meaning

1. (euphemism, often humorous) poor; without enough money.
2. (said of oneself, as a joke) short of money right now: «I'm a bit financially challenged till payday».

### In the lessons

A wordy, politically careful way to say «poor» or «broke»; sometimes used in reports, more often jokingly about oneself. Polite or humorous, all regions, especially US. Part of a family of «-challenged» joke euphemisms (vertically challenged = short).

### Examples

- I can't come to the cinema, I'm financially challenged this week.
- The programme helps financially challenged students pay for books.
- "Financially challenged" just means "broke", laughed my brother.
- Many financially challenged families use the food bank.
- Since buying that bike, I'm a bit financially challenged.
- The report described the area as financially challenged.
- My uncle says he's not poor, just financially challenged.
- Being financially challenged is nothing to be ashamed of.

### Note

Trap: the «-challenged» pattern often sounds silly or sarcastic; in serious writing «low-income» or «struggling» is kinder. Plain words: poor, broke, short of money.
