### Meaning

1. (euphemism, school reports) does not concentrate in class; chats, daydreams or messes around instead of working.
2. (literal) has real difficulty keeping attention on one job, sometimes because of a condition such as ADHD.

### In the lessons

Teachers' report language that softens «doesn't pay attention» or «messes about»; polite and professional, all English-speaking schools. Parents learn to read it as a warning.

### Examples

- Leo is a friendly boy but finds it hard to stay on task.
- The report said, "Ava finds it hard to stay on task during maths."
- Translation: "finds it hard to stay on task" means "chats too much".
- When the window is open, our whole class finds it hard to stay on task.
- Some children find it hard to stay on task and need short breaks.
- Mum read my report and said, "Finds it hard to stay on task? So you've been mucking about."
- He finds it hard to stay on task when he sits next to his best friend.

### Note

Trap: it sounds gentle, but it is a criticism. «On task» means doing the work set; «off task» means not doing it. Plain words: does not concentrate, is distracted, messes about.
