### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) not always having enough food or money for food; sometimes going hungry.
2. (formal) not being sure where the next meals will come from.

### In the lessons

Official, charity and government language that avoids the stark words «hungry» or «poor»; used in reports, news and school lunch programmes. Formal, all regions, especially US.

### Examples

- One in eight families in the area is food insecure.
- The school breakfast club helps children who are food insecure.
- Food insecure families can get help from the food bank.
- The report measured food insecurity among students.
- "Food insecure" really means people don't have enough to eat.
- Many food insecure adults skip meals so their children can eat.
- The charity's aim is to help food insecure households.
- Prices rose and more people became food insecure.

### Note

Trap: «insecure» usually means anxious about yourself; here it means the food supply is not safe or certain. Plain words: hungry, without enough food. In a statistics problem, «1 in 8 food insecure» means one eighth of the group.
