### Meaning

1. (advert phrase) given away for no money to someone who will look after it well, used of pets or old furniture.
2. (humorous euphemism) used jokingly to offer an annoying person or thing: «Little brother, free to a good home».

### In the lessons

Common on noticeboards, online adverts and in newspapers; everyday, UK, US, Australia. Often used as a joke about siblings. Safety: pets offered free should go to people who will truly care for them.

### Examples

- Kittens, free to a good home.
- Old sofa, free to a good home, you collect.
- My sister made a sign: "Annoying brother, free to a good home."
- We got our dog from an advert that said "free to a good home".
- The piano is free to a good home, but you'll need four strong people to move it.
- Vets warn that "free to a good home" pets should still be checked carefully.
- Grandma's old books are free to a good home.
- "Homework, free to a good home!" joked Sam.

### Note

Trap: free means no money, but a pet still costs money for food and the vet. Used about a person, it is a joke, not a real offer. In a money problem, the price is zero.
