### Meaning

1. (literal, praise) interesting, unusual and with a strong personality or style: «a face full of character».
2. (euphemism, house and shop adverts) old, odd or in need of repairs: «a cottage full of character» may have a leaky roof.

### In the lessons

Estate agents and adverts use it to make old, worn or awkward buildings sound charming; spin, all regions, especially UK. As praise for people, animals or towns it is warm and sincere.

### Examples

- The advert described a cottage full of character; the roof leaked.
- Grandma's old kitchen is full of character, with its creaky floor.
- Our town's narrow streets are full of character.
- The old dog's scruffy face is full of character.
- "Full of character" in a house advert often means "needs work," Dad warned.
- The actor's voice is full of character.
- The pub is full of character, with crooked beams and a fire.
- The teacher said my story's hero was full of character.

### Note

Trap: in adverts it can hide problems; ask what needs fixing. About people it is real praise. Plain meanings: interesting; or old and in need of repair.
