### In the lessons

In safety lessons, fumes from car exhausts, petrol, paint, glue, cleaning products or a fire can make you dizzy or ill; open windows, use things outside or in a well-aired place, and never mix cleaning products. In science, burning fuels gives off fumes that pollute the air. In stories, a character «fuming» is very angry. Phrases: «exhaust fumes», «paint fumes», «toxic fumes», «fuming with anger».

### Note

Usually plural: «fumes». Some deadly gases, such as carbon monoxide, have no smell at all — that is why homes have carbon monoxide alarms. If you smell gas at home, leave and tell an adult; don't switch lights on or off.
