## In Jewish tradition

The Garden of Eden was the first garden, planted by God for the first man, where he lived and worked. Later books use garden as a picture: a well-watered garden for beauty and love, and "a garden shut up" for a bride who is kept pure and special.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads Eden as a place of perfect closeness to God, and "Gan Eden" is also the name for the world of reward after death. It reads the Song of Songs as a love poem between God and Israel, with the garden as the place where they meet.
