## In Jewish tradition

It means collecting things, as with the man gathering sticks on the Sabbath, or the "gathering together of the waters" on the third day of creation.

**Interpretation.** The stick-gatherer is read as breaking the law of Sabbath rest, and shows how seriously the Sabbath is taken.
