## Everyday

1. (a name) Gemma is a girl's name, popular in the UK, Ireland and Australia; it comes from Italian and Latin for «gem» or «jewel». [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/G/gemma/#m1)
2. (science) A gemma is a tiny bud or group of cells on mosses and liverworts that breaks off and grows into a new plant. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/G/gemma/#m2)

### In the lessons

In stories Gemma is a person's first name and tells the reader who someone is. In science lessons, liverworts have little cups full of gemmae, washed out by raindrops to start new plants — a way of reproducing without seeds or spores. It is also the name of an AI model made by a technology company.

### Note

As a name it has a capital and nothing else should be invented about the person. Pronounced «JEM-uh». The science plural is «gemmae» (Latin, «JEM-ee»). Not the same as «gem» (a precious stone), though the name comes from it.
