### Meaning

1. (euphemism) old age, especially the time after people stop working (retirement).
2. the best or most successful period of something: «the golden years of television».

### In the lessons

Positive, cheerful way to name old age, common in adverts for retirement homes, pensions and holidays; polite, all regions, especially US. The second sense is common in history and sport.

### Examples

- Grandma is enjoying her golden years by the sea.
- The company sells holidays for people in their golden years.
- Save money now so your golden years are comfortable.
- The film looks back at the golden years of the circus.
- Many people volunteer in their golden years.
- "Golden years? My knees don't feel golden," joked Grandad.
- Those were the club's golden years, when they won everything.
- The retirement home advert promised "golden years in comfort".

### Note

Trap: not made of gold; it is a nice label for old age. Can sound like an advert. Plain words: old age, retirement; or best time.
