### Meaning

1. (euphemism) died (the «maker» is God, who made the person).
2. (humorous) broken or destroyed: «the old toaster has gone to meet its maker».

### In the lessons

A slightly old-fashioned, often humorous or dramatic way to say someone has died; used in stories, films, jokes and gossip. All regions. Too jokey for a real funeral.

### Examples

- The old pirate has gone to meet his maker.
- In the film, the villain falls off the cliff and goes to meet his maker.
- My old laptop has gone to meet its maker.
- Great-grandad went to meet his maker at ninety-nine.

- The cowboy said, "Prepare to meet your maker!"
- The goldfish has gone to meet his maker.
- It's too jokey to use in a sympathy card.

### Note

Trap: «maker» means God, not a factory. Can sound cold or funny about a real death. Plain word: died.
