## In Jewish tradition

Grass and herbs are signs of the land's fruitfulness and of God's blessing of rain. Pharaoh's dream has cows feeding in reed-grass, a word that is Egyptian in origin. The Prophets and Psalms also use withered grass as a picture of how short and weak human life is.

**Interpretation.** Moses promises grass for the cattle as a reward for keeping God's commandments. The rabbis taught that a person should feed their animals before sitting down to eat. Tradition reads the withering grass as a reminder that only God lasts forever.
