## In Jewish tradition

Used for deceit and lying speech, often joined with violence or wickedness. Jacob's taking Esau's blessing is called "guile."

**Interpretation.** Tradition teaches that guarding one's speech from deceit is a core duty, as Psalm 34 says. Commentators often discuss Jacob's act as a hard case, defending his purpose while still noting the cost of deceit.
