## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah this often means "blessed" or "fortunate." Leah calls herself happy when Asher is born, and Moses says Israel is happy because the LORD saves it.

**Interpretation.** The name Asher, from this same root, is read as meaning happiness, and the tradition sees Israel's good fortune as coming from God's help, not from its own strength.
