### Note

A heap is a group (a total); taking from it subtracts, adding to it adds. Trap: «a heap of» or «heaps of» in speech can just mean «a lot», with no number. A heaped spoon holds more than a level spoon.

## In Jewish tradition

A pile of things, such as grain, stones or ruins. It can also mean the piles of gifts or offerings brought to the Temple, as in Hezekiah's time. Job uses it as a picture: his iniquity is "heaped up" as if God stores it.

**Interpretation.** Tradition notes that the "heaps" in Chronicles were the great piles of gifts the people brought to the priests and Levites when they gave generously. Job's heaping of iniquity is read as his feeling that God keeps a careful record against him.
