# heath

noun (a heath, heaths)

«heath» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

A heath is a large area of open, wild land with poor soil, covered with low plants like heather, gorse and grasses, and few trees. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/heath/#m1)

### In the lessons

In geography and nature lessons, heaths are a habitat for special plants, insects, lizards, snakes and birds; they are common in the UK and Ireland and can catch fire easily in dry summers. In old stories and Shakespeare, a heath is a lonely, windy place where travellers meet strange things. Many places are named Heath, like Hampstead Heath in London.
