### In the lessons

In geography, the equator splits the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere (USA, Canada, UK, Ireland) and the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand); seasons are opposite, so when it is summer in one, it is winter in the other. In maths, a hemisphere is a 3-D shape: half a sphere, with one flat circular face and one curved face. In science, the brain has two hemispheres. Phrases: Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, left/right hemisphere.

### Examples

- Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/H/hemisphere/#x1)

### Note

«Hemi-» means half, so hemisphere = half a sphere. Maths: a hemisphere has 2 faces (1 flat circle, 1 curved), 1 curved edge and 0 vertices. Its volume is half that of the whole sphere.
